The Public Technology Institute recently released a list of top ten technology management and application priorities for local government in 2016. PTI asked local government technology executives to rank a list of priorities from one to ten. Carolinas IT has a solution for each of these technology priorities and we will explore how we can help you with each of these priorities in a series of blogs.

# 1 – Security
For the second year in a row, security is once again a top priority for technology executives in local government.
Security includes security frameworks, training and awareness, and budget requirements.

Frameworks – Think of your network security framework as a house with doors, windows, and walls, inside of a monitored compound, inside of a perimeter fence. This type of comprehensive, multi-layered approach has proven to the most successful in offering protection. Components of such an architecture include firewalls with intelligence to analyze traffic, anti-virus programs, DNS security, intrusion prevention/detection, and access control mechanisms.

Policies, Training, and Awareness– Developing and training your employees on security policies is essential to ensuring your information remains secure. Your company’s security policies should clearly define standards for acceptable use, access requirements, password requirements, fraud prevention, and many other security details. Training should be conducted as policies are updated, and annual refresher training should be mandatory. The security policies and procedures should be supported and enforced by company leadership. All employees should be required to acknowledge they have received the initial security policy and any updates that occur.

Budget Requirements –Budgets can sometimes be the reason you’re not improving your security, but it doesn’t mean you can’t do something. What would happen if your security was compromised? Think of the cost associated with having to implement the systems and measures you should currently have in place. That cost is likely much higher than the cost to implement the solution.
